Sanctuary, mixed media stop-motion animation, projection installation, duration: 9 minute loop
Sanctuary is a contemplative landscape delicately constructed from unkempt, noxious weeds and urban flora gathered from Melbourne’s inner west suburb of Footscray.
Sanctuary aims to conjure a sense of preservation and refuge while reflecting on the urban landscape both past and present. Valour and hidden beauty in what is out of place or unwanted is revealed as the transient nature of our human capacity to seek connection to and interpret our environment.
Sanctuary was presented as part of the Gertrude Street Projection Festival Mentorship Program 2016 with mentor Yandell Walton. The work was displayed for the duration of the festival and received a judges commendation.
Other projects presented as part of the GSPF Mentorship Program 2016 included:
‘Nuuxnuuxsi’ by Nadia Faragaab
‘The Detour’ by Aphrodite Feros-Fooke and Chase Burns
